Katie Hines Small Worlds

 Date: 3/7/23

I've had a lot of trouble with finding a good object for this project, but I have a couple of ideas trying to work with what I have.

My First Object: Vintage Chocolate Tin

This is the one I am the most excited about since it is so reflective and intricate. My idea is to create a form that is chandelier-like in that it attaches to the ceiling and reaches down into the room, maybe I'll connect it to the floor but I want to see how I feel as I work on it. It will be made of toothpicks since they are small and can be worked if I need them smaller. I'm thinking of doing it in an art deco style to connect with the time era similar to this lovely tin container. I tried to make a "sketch" of it on my tablet but it looks very flat because it's a picture. I would like it to be more dimensional than the image and I think making it black instead of white will lend to the art deco style when combined with the shiney gold of the tin. I also had the idea to put mirrors on one or two of the walls to make it feel endless and expanded, but I don't want to take away from the lovely reflections that it already has.

As far as a door, I really don't want to cut into the container because it is so lovely as it is, I'd really like the delicate feel to stay and cutting a hole might take away from that. So that leaves the problem of "How are viewers supposed to enter?", I will create a small staircase that would go up and over the edge of the tin and down into the interior. I also thought about putting it on it's side vertically but there isn't as much room and doesn't take advantage of the space very well.

The second idea that I had was to use this spiderman head cup that I've had for years. I want to make a little room with a "murder board" and the viewer standing inside looking at it. It would be fun but a little difficult with how small the interior space is. I don't have any sketches (forgot my book at home like a goof), but I have images of the interior (found below). I like this idea but it doesn't feel very interesting overall and I'm not sure what else to do with the object because it's so small.

Update on my small worlds project, it's finished! (Images below)

Measurements (as the box is on it's side):
Height: 7 5/8 in
Width: 4 1/2 in
Depth: 2 1/4 in

I decided that 1in = 6ft
This means that the scale size of the space would be:
Height: 45 3/4 ft
Width: 27 ft
Depth: 13 1/2 ft

(I apologize for the poor quality of this last image. I tried to take a picture as if the viewer were looking up at the piece.)
