Cierra Roberts- Small Worlds

Mrch 19, 2023

These piectures are the final result and I am very happy with how this piece turned out. The sketch is the completed box including the figure which came to be a little larger than 4.5 inches. This also has all of the measurements for if this were to be scaled up. 1in. = 4 ft.

My small world installation is almost done, I have assembled the false ceiling and made small can lights to disguise the strip light. All of the ferns are in place and once it dries I will be able to assemble them and take some pictures for feedback.

March 6, 2023

We had a minor set back as my strip lights decided to crumble to pieces. So I just went and bought different lights that are more durable and will look cleaner with the can lights I am making. Heres and in process photo of the lighting.

I have put all of the ferns into the box and arranged them to create a field from the viewing point. The next steps will be to paint the the lighting and sculpt the figure to go inside the field. The figure can only be 4 - 4.5 inches long so it does not crush the ferns. I bought some sculpey to create the figure and since it is my first time using sculpey wish me luck!

Here are some updates to my small world. I am going to cover the strip lights to make it look like a feeling with the lights inset. I really enjoy the depth and variety that is occurring through the ferns, it feels like a peaceful space. I need to finish adding and arranging all of my ferns because right now they seem a little spotty.

I forgot to post this earlier but this is my ideation leading up to the field of ferns idea. I need to reference this when writing my statement as it has a lot of good questions that I am answering through the process.

Update:

I’m thinking of color pallets that feel nostalgic or healing for the ferns. I have to consider that the walls of my small gallery are violet. I have also acquired lights that change color so I will be posting updates on that as well! Let me know what you think of the colors!

Lets try Adobes color picker. It would help if you found a picture that you can steal the colors from?Let's look at what sculpture has laminated as well. I personally am working on being more practiced and proficient with color, but some of these look off to me. Is that blue accurate to the background. We could try and take a pic of the background and then use adobe to help find its mates? I also wonder if the color is necessary? Would this piece be as interesting and thought provoking if they were simply enlarged?Look at Kara walker's work? Simple sometimes works.  I also do not see the color pallette from your drawing on here??  Try that one.

I’m going to laser cut my ferns for the inside of the box and then paint them. I’m still deciding on the color palette but I want them to be vibrant and joyous.

Send me these asap. I only have the first one.

Here are some more ideas I had after deciding on my object. The purple interior of the box could work to my advantage with color and lighting.

Walking into a room full of ferns would be a dream come true for me. Living in Wyoming we do not have very many ferns because of how dry our climate is. The ferns symbolize new life and new beginnings which I feel strongly about as things are consistently changing for the better in my life lately.
This piece is a callback to similar pieces I have done considering the gaze. The idea of being looked at while also looking, at the same time being objectified. This piece ties into my BFA work more menacingly and differently.

These are the objects I have collected and believe have the potential to be gallery spaces to house an installation.

Inside View

This one is my favorite because of the lid situation. The lid completely comes off but also latches on both sides. I think If I were to drill a hole in the side or made a small door It would be a beautiful space.

I was intrigued by this object because of the shape and length of the space inside.

Artist inspiration:

Janine Antoni's use of the space to create the feeling of being underground is impressive. I also am very fascinated with roots and the way they grow so taking this form out of context gives it an entirely new meaning.

Tara Donovan

The forms Donovan uses are powerful and soft all at the same time which is something I strive for in my own work.

Ernesto Nesto uses pattern and color in their installations that take me to a space of memory and nostalgia. The weight of these dark forms and the tension of them pulling on the fabri  creates a dynamic that is inspiring for someone who wants to explore thenonobjectivee world of art.

Heide Fasnacht's work is dynamic and explosive. The icon of the home is something I have been exploring as it is a powerful and widely recognized symbol.

Ideas

Idea 1: For my first idea I wanted to explore the form and meaning of the Staghorn Fern. I have come to understand that plants are conducive to my creative practice. Therefore I want to return to the plant and more specifically the fern. The staghorn fern is Symbolicofr the circle of life or cycles within life. As someone with Bipolar disorder I experience cycles of emotions frequently, and  this meaningresonatess with me. I wanted to make a large Staghorn Fern leaf which would be coloredbrightlyy on the inside and black on the outside. That way the color on the inside would illuminate the negative space and glow through the veins of the leaves.
Idea 2: Similar to the first idea but different form. There would be a box in the center of the ceiling of the room glowing red light. From that theStaghornn fern would be "growing" off of that box and coming into the gallery space. This is how these ferns grow naturally, they can grow off of the wall and off of trees which I think is beautiful.

Idea 3: These forms have been really attracting me lately, it is the form a body makes when hunched over or slouching. I wanted to talk about memory and how it can linger even when the moment has passed by. I wanted to approach this subjectmore colorfully and playfullyy. I also would like to dye the forms in wine so that the whole room smells of wine asliket if the scent of my childhood.

Idea 4:
For this object,t I was considering hanging iris flowers from the ceiling or thestaghornn fern again. I really wanted to play with the expected orientation of flowers and how it changes meaning or feeling when flipped upside down.

Idea 5: This Idea stems from a recurring dream I have had since early childhood. In the dream, I am confronted with two large masses. One is soft and smooth, the other chaotic and overwhelming. I thought bringing this strange visual into space might help me gain some understanding of why I continue to experience this dream.

  1. In relation to Ernesto Nesto from your inspired artists and your ideas, would you consider designing how you hang things like your kidney beans or idea 4?

  2. Cierra,

I love the ferns, and that you find plants so conducive to your practice. I still have the inchplant you gave me, except it's now much larger and I've propagated it into lots of other little inchplants. Staghorns are really fascinating, ancient, very resilient, and can be mounted and grow onto all sorts of interesting materials. I think that one of your most interesting visual relationships at play here is between the form of the fern and that red light. Shadow is going to be major here. Are you planning on using actual plants in this piece, or are you wanting to construct them? I think using actual plants would be delightful, and sitting in the hand, with the red light, it could be very strong. If you do - staghorn ferns are fairly sensitive to light, heat, and especially low humidity. Low light you can get away with for the time it'll be in the gallery space, but humidity is going to be difficult here, since the West space is open and no humidifier is going to raise the moisture level in that hall. Misting is going to be your friend - maybe you could incorporate fog into the piece? A fogger incorporated into the structure of the piece could keep it looking fresh and create some interesting atmosphere. Large staghorn specimens can be expensive - and will not survive shipment here currently without being overnighted with heat packs. Etsy, and eBay, will probably be able to get you such a thing, but it will not be cheap and if you invest that in a plant you probably want to keep it after.

  3. The image of your small worlds piece where the lighting is much darker has a very eery feel as opposed to the ones with the led strip lights- also you could put fabric or something at the top to make those lights more muted

  4. Cierra,
Your final piece was one of the strongest small worlds, in my opinion. It was a good decision to change the type of lighting, the spotlights were much more successful than the bulky LED strips. The layers of ferns coming together and building on top of the figure look fantastic, the interior feels very ominous and almost like a murder scene. The figure feels a little bulky, but considering this is your first time using sculpey, you did a good job!
