Virgil Morrison-Materialistic idea

For my Materialistic Ideas, I want to focus on the idea of multiples and possibly using lights to amplify shadows. I really want to revisit a piece from a long time ago. It was basically a roman/Greek popup book. I cut out almost every picture in the book and made it feel like it was coming alive. I want to take this idea and make it larger and fill it will a considerable amount of insects, coming out of one central spot, whether that be from a book or a crevasse. I want my viewers to feel overwhelmed because of the fact that for every 1 human on earth there are 200 million insects That's the equivalent of 400 lbs. of insects per acer of land. I want my insects to be very flat and not very detailed in the since that all my cut outs feel like shadows, but once the viewer approaches them, they can see that they are all separate entities. I would also like to incorporate sound, as well as some sweet or putrid smells that would attract certain kinds of insects. If I were to incorporate these smells, I would use flowers and carnivorous plants such as the Venus fly trap or Corpse flowers.

The inspiration of this idea comes from Carlos Amorales’s piece Black Cloud which has been continuously growing since 2007. It started at 30,000 then grew to 45,000 black paper moths in 2009. I think its effective how he chooses these very white pristine spaces to install his moths on. It really makes each moth stand out and the simplicity and lack of detail on the wings is interesting because it relies so much on form to portray what is being seen.

Carlos Amorales
He was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1970 and received his education in the two different academes in the Netherlands.  He was trained as a painter but then realized he didn’t have much interest in painting. He now explores varies types of media from painting to digital to performance art. He gets a lot of his influence from his heritage and has “changed his name to Amorales meaning ‘without morals’. He did this because it portrays his work and makes him stand out from his father who was a pioneer of conceptual art work in Mexico” (Freize). Many of his piece and ideas come from explaining language through different means of art work. Other pieces of his are Life in the Folds 2017, La Langue des Morts(Language of the Dead) 2012, and Amorales vs Amorales 1997.

This is in no way representative of my quilt interpretation, but serves as an example of cyanotypes on fabric

For my Materialist installation, I would like to concentrate on the people that have shaped my life the most. This piece will put into visual context the individuals that have created so many important memories with me and helped write who I am today. My execution will allow me to involve my interests in photography and fiber arts.

For each person I will create a "quilt" of sorts. Using Cyanotype reactive fabric, I will expose photos, text, and object silhouettes that can then be pieces together using a variety of textile techniques. I will also embed 3-D objects into the fabric based compositions. I will tone all the quilts in a similar tone to remain consistent, however I will bring in slight amounts of relevant color to maintain uniqueness and interest in each composition.

I would like the suspend the fabric from different heights on tree branches. This will allow me to transform the space even more, and it will further its relevance to my concept. Tying in natural elements will strengthen the comparison to how much these people have helped me to grow and how many years the relationships have taken to nurture and maintain. My space will be a little forest of monumental individuals and memories.

Ismael Dominguez - Materialistic Idea

For the Materialistic project I want to revisit a previous project that did not turn out as planned in a new format. Last Spring I created ceramic spikes that hung from the ceiling in a line just above eye level, a tragic end came to this piece so I would like to create a new version. I am thinking of taking plaster gauze molds off of various parts of a person and creating the broken human figure, similar to my aluminum piece, but out of paper. Hanging down from the ceiling I would like to incorporate wax spikes dangling just above the figure. I would like to utilize some type of dramatic side lighting to cast the silhouette on one of the walls of the gallery to engage the space even more.

I knew that when I started this piece that it was going to be very ambitious, but I did not expect it to be as difficult and time consuming as it turned out to be.
Why is that? Space takes time to fill or alter so a feeling is invoked when the viewer walks in. Remeber this process and give yoruself more time than not enough to accomplish your goal.
That being said, I am extremely happy with how the piece turned out and I received many compliments and comments of people coming up to me and saying “I know exactly how that feels” or “I understand that completely”. Hearing this made me like my finished work even more because it was successfully conveying the idea that I had intended. As far as things that I would change about the installation are a few of the things that were mentioned in critique such as making the hanging eyelets smaller so that they can disappear and alluding to falling rather than suspension. I would also add sound, like the tonal humming that Aubree played during critique, something calming, but almost haunting. Lastly, I think that I would either make the hanging grid disappear more or try and activate it in some way. I am not sure how I would accomplish this, but I noticed that people would inevitably view the piece, and then look upward to see how it was suspended so I would like to avoid that or activate it and make it much more intentional. Overall I am very happy with this piece and there are only a few small things that I would change about it just to be able to finesse the completed outcome.
Right now, I woudl not worry about if people ar elooking up. They are doing that becasue of how intrciate and teh shear volume of monofilament used. there are other ways to make this happen- but it means plotting out exactly where the lines need to be hung in order to make this happen. I think you had an idea of what you wanted the piece to look like- but not how to hang it until you got in the space and fgured it out.

The piece is a success and you should be proud. Learn from this and take that information to the next piece.

Installation for this/that gallery

I currently have 3 ideas that I am very passionate about

Make pharmacy pills that are spilling from bottles and combining in the center of the room.

Take a whole bunch of small doodles from mine and other peoples note book sketches and combine them into a giant collage and then paint on the collage

Make tons of little gerenuks that fill the room.
These little scribbles show the new idea that I am most passionate about.  I will no longer be collecting notes from students but instead simply using line paper overlapping as my canvas for all three walls. The area itself will have at least one desk or more with line paper and pens for anyone to do whatever they want with it. The room will be filled with paper planes, cutie catchers, crumbled papers, and doodles galore! I want to have a completely immersive art piece that reminds people of the intense imagination that constantly interrupted learning and the paper that was meant to be used for notes is being used for fun.

Materialistic Installation Ideas
(sketches will come)
For this installation piece, I wanted to explore the materials and forms I was creating with the small worlds installation and create a similar environment within the That gallery space.
I want to have fabric become the "walls and ceiling". I will drape fabric down the walls and have forms mounted to the wall so that the fabric doesn't become static, but rather bulging out in different places. I want to drape fabric across the ceiling so that I can "complete" this fabric room but also manipulate the lighting. I want a similar ambient lighting instead of six directional lights that can be seen. I want to create plaster forms that will act as seats or benches. I will have fabric cover any of the structure of the seats so that the space looks completely made of fabric. A way to create movement within the space is to use oscillating fans that will make the draped fabric billow.
With this installation, it will be more about the form and materials, as well as creating an environment. I want to create that sense of comfort and calmness that people felt from the small world. I want to continue to develop these forms so that i can in turn develop my other conceptual work. I am at a point where I need to continue researching and developing that work so that I create pieces that I feel present my intentions. That is why I want to continue working on these forms, as well as enjoying how the different forms and textures can be created using fabric and plaster.

The outcome of this piece for be was very successful. The original vision I had altered over the course of the construction process, but I feel it was for the better. I wanted to have more forms within the space because when I brought the seven I had completed into the space they felt dwarfed by this massive space. I hadnt added the fabric element so I wasnt sure how it was going to look when finalized so I started to carve more pieces. I started to get an allergic reaction to either the styrofoam or chemicals/ material on the surface of the styrofoam. I decided to stop working with the unfinished pieces and focus on altering the surface of the forms I had completed so that I didnt have to continue being around the material and re triggering the hives I was getting.
I painted the surface of the forms to match the wall paint. The whole space consisted of muted tones of white with softened light throughout the space. There is a fan above the draped fabric to create ripples so that the space didnt feel too stagnant. The fan also creates a soft white noise, sounding like wind which also creates a sort of nostalgic sense within the space. I wanted to continue manipulating the senses by having a subtle and soothing scent that is wafted throughout the air. There are some forms that people can sit on or a bean bad for them to lay on or rest their head and feel the wave of comfort wash over them.
The whole idea behind this piece, besides working with the hard and soft aspects of the materials was to create a sense of calmness and comfort, similar to the feelings i get when laying outside watching the clouds roll across the sky. This is where my intentions come through. The scent is subtle like that of fresh cut grass which could be smelled while gazing at the clouds. The movement of the fabric creates a motion that could resemble clouds moving. the sound could resemble wind or other distant noises. The forms are meant for people to interpret with their imagination, like finding creates within the clouds.

Site Specific Installation

Humans create a tremendous amount of trash and waste that ends up in landfills or even worse, get thrown out of car windows or dropped on the ground instead of in trash. This laziness and lack of compassion for the environment has created piles of trash that are scattered across the landscapes. When driving down the highways and interstates, there is always trash that is caught in fences and on plants as the wind tries to blow it way. Nature is a great collector of trash as it gets blown into the corner of fences areas and piles up or gradually builds up as it gets snagged on plants and fences.

The inspiration for this piece came when driving down the highway to Las Vegas, NM. As I was talking with my friends, I saw out of the corner of my eye, this huge black form that looked as if it was soaring low to the ground. I shifted my sight to try and spot this magnificent create, where I realized it was a black plastic bag that was caught on a fence and being whipped around by the wind.
This attention grabbing form really caught my attention but was nothing more than the evidence of the lack of concern and empathy for nature on humans part.

My idea for this piece is to create a flock of ambiguous bird forms that look as if they are flying away as if they were spooked, like birds do when you drive close to them. I have scouted out different areas that currently have a bunch of trash within the area. I will go and collect the trash to create the installation. In an ideal world, the wind will work with me so that the forms have movement and look as if they are flying. They are perpetually stuck in this space, never able to escape. I think this will have great impact when complete. The amount of trash used to create the forms will talk on the destruction of nature and carelessness of throwing things away, as well as how trash and garbage is harmful for the environment. Animals die from this waste and if we continue to not care about proper disposal, the only birds we will be able to see are the trash bags that appear to be birds.

As I continue to work and develop my idea for this site specific installation, I have altered the original idea. Where I live, there are always huge murders of crows that perch in trees, on power lines, and even in the streets. I feel this has a large part to do with being near a gas station and fast food restaurants where there is a lot of litter and goodies for these birds to scavenge from. I have altered the design to create a fake or imitation murder. With the trash that is collected, I will construct birds that will be placed on the ground, in the dirt and on the side walk, as well as create the forms that look as if they are trying to fly away. The forms on the ground will draw in peoples attentions and the motion hopefully created with the "flying"birds  will add to this. The viewer will be displeased to find out that all they are gawking at is trash instead of the magnificent or ominous site that comes with an actual murder of crows.

                Majored in architecture
Little connection to Vietnam besides the televised news across the country
                Beat over 1400 competitors
Simple black walls that emerges from the constitution Gardens in Washington, DC
Fiercely modern design, part of architecture class
Imaged stark black walls that began inside the earth, growing in height until they met
“like a wound that is closed and healing”
V-shaped wall, designed to point toward the Lincoln and Washington memorials
More than 58,000 names inscribed on that are ½ inch high
Built in 1982 and commemorated military personnel who died/ declared MIA during Vietnam war
The public expected more imposing, complex monument, with marble, columns, and statues in the vein of other buildings on the mall
Veterans protested the design, claiming it was an ugly insult the portrayed the war as shameful, dishonorable and worth hiding.
Campaign to change the wall to white and adding 8ft high sculpture of soldiers to the site.
They used everything to change or abandon the project.
The committee compromised and added the 3rd place sculpture near by
                Frederick Elliot Hart, Three Soldiers.
Lin wanted it to be a-political but she was a weapon for a political debate.
8.4 million to build funding came from the private sector.
3 acres of the national mall for the memorial
Lin is now a world-respected artists and architect

Project #2 Ideas

For project 2, I will continue my outdoor exploration. In my first project of looking at wonders from the outside in, this one will rather take you to the inside. My idea is to make a hand made projection by cutting out shapes in paper and then making a box to insert a light into. The projection will include the river system in Wyoming, and another one of the river system in Kansas, projected as pairs on each opposite facing walls. I will then have a projector hanging from the ceiling to project a video of moving water onto the floor. I imagine showing this with background noise as well.

My idea to have the river system is to show the distances and depths between the two different places I call home, and where I am being taken from them. I think an amazing thing about rivers are that they are ever changing and always moving, if you were to follow one you would never end in the same spot rather somewhere completely different. I think this relates to my connections of home because although where I start I am familiar with, I am getting into the river with no idea of where it will take me. I also view water as pure and a cleanser, your journey with it has the possibility to wash you of all previous experiences and prepare you for the destination, taking you through some rough and some smooth waters. Rivers connect and conjoin in different ways, which remind me of the connections that will be made throughout the time you spend on this earth, wether it be connections with places, or the connections that you make to the places you come to know well. It's scary to see the way water moves so fast and it may scare me to think about moving that fast, but I need to trust the current.

So this is my decision to depict water. Another beautiful natural wonder of this world in all forms, and another beautiful way to feel at peace with my own self.

Here are some pictures that relate to my idea.
