I decided to resketch a design for the tree in Washington Park. Again, this is site that is nostalgic to my childhood. However, in this design instead of focusing on the happier moments of my childhood, I decided to ALSO address the difficult parts.
I did not get very far in my sketch. But the difficult parts of my childhood would be represented by black fabric wrapping around the tree and hanging from the branches. The happier moment are represented in the people who made it easier and better through their favorite flowers. These include my grandmothers, sister, childhood best friend and her mother. They will grow out of the darkness/dark fabric.
For my maternal grandmother: peonies in periwinkle.
For my paternal grandmother: pink roses as from a rose bush
For my sister: morning glories in lavender
For my best friend and her mother: sunflowers
These will be made out of cardstock with a wire armiture covered in floral tape.
I'm not entirely sure how I want to address/work the fabric yet and am open to suggestions.

For my sites, since I grew up in Laramie, I decided to focus on places from my childhood and use my childhood as content. My childhood was pretty rough, entailing a lot of heartache and trauma, but there were good things too. And this is my focus, the good things about it.
My first site is under one of the bridges at LaPrele Park. When we were kids, we would smear mud on our hands and print them on the underside of the bridge. I want to play into this by creating hands to somehow install on the bottom of the bridge. I was even thrilled to find my hand print from highschool still in tact when I went back to photograph it.
My second site is the inside of the trees next to the band shell at Washington Park. Since I was very young, I was quite fond of climbing, particularly rock climbing, but also trees. I climbed trees with my friends even into middle school. And I climbed these particular trees frequently. For this design, I want to make a plethora of sock dolls and arrange them on the tree so they're climbing and hanging out all over it. This is probably the design I am most drawn to.
Finally, is what we called the "dirt hills." They're bike jump tracks on the south side of town. As kids, we would ride our bikes here all summer and it's a very fond memory for me. My design was to make miniature bikes making jumps on some of the tracks.
Im also from Laramie so it was really interesting to see your locations and hear about your memories. Personally I love your first concept. The location is very interesting, the story is compelling and it seems it would be a fairly common experience for people to connect to.
ReplyDeleteI grew up here, and did all of these things too!!! What is your idea for the mud hand print installation?
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the hands, looking on the Brightside of a time that was so painful. how are you thinking of making the hands after last class?
