Bri's Materialistic

April 19, 2023

Here are the images of my finished piece. There are a few images with the spiral and others without it. I am overall happy with how it turned out.

Update: The walls are finished, I just need to attach the spiral, place the nest on the branch, and finish up my American Robin.

I really began to sketch out trees and work in the space.

So I decided to go with a different bird, an American Robin instead. I wanted to go with a different bird because it has a bit more color. Also, I remember seeing these birds in my grandparents' yard, which is where I grew up for a large part of my childhood. I feel a connection to the bird because it brings memories of my grandparents. Here is my bird so far.

Honestly, I have been struggling with where to start my materialistic piece. So I did some research on the type of bird I thought would work best. Ultimately, I decided that the dove was the type of bird I wanted. In my research, I looked up the symbolism of the bird. Through my search, I found there to be a variety of meanings. However, I found the explanation of the dove representing spirituality to be the most intriguing. The site explains that the dove shows communication with one's own inner voice or intuition. Especially, the symbolism of a dead dove, which represents new beginnings and change. I feel like both representations resonate with me.

As a starting place, I think it would be best to start by beginning an armature of the dove. I will be using a series of references to create the bird. However, I am not entirely sure where or how to start the spiral. Also, how will I fit it into the space? I was talking with one of my peers in class, and they posed this question to me. Then they made a suggestion on connecting the spiral in joints and then putting it together in the space. What would be the best course of action?

As for my materialistic, I was thinking about the bird's nest. Right now, in the previous image, the nest is sitting on a shelf. Should I keep the nest on the shelf? Or would it be more beneficial to place them in a setting, like a tree branch? I am really open to any ideas, or recommendations. My only concern about putting the nest in a setting is having too much going on. As the saying goes, less is more. Also, should the nest be placed in the left corner? Or one of the others? As for lighting in the space, I think the spiral will provide a variety of shadows that will envelop the viewer. I am still open to suggestions on what materials to use for this installation.

As for my materialistic piece, I am still a little uncertain about the materials I would like to create with this piece. However, I had a peer suggest making the spiral out of wire and building it up in areas. Then they suggested creating the bird out of canvas and painting it. I enjoyed the idea of painting the bird, however, I am not sure how to go about creating it in three-dimensional. Should the spiral be made out of wire? Should I leave the wire exposed? Would it be possible to create the bird from canvas? I would not want the bird to appear tacky. Does it matter what type of bird is shown? I would like to say yes, but then I will need to decide what bird would be best.

I would like to add the more I think about this piece the more I feel like I can say. The spiral is a part of the piece that speaks to me spiritually. It has a variety of representations, but one that ultimately stuck out to me was how it relates to life. Personally, I believe everyone experiences birth, death, and rebirth. In the corner of the gallery is a nest of eggs, which signifies birth. Should I move the nest to a different corner? Then there is the dead bird on the ground among sticks, this shows death. Then the spiral is the connection between the two. The viewers' eyes move along the spiral, following its path. This path is the action of rebirth and life. From the top to the bottom of the spiral is the way many may view life, but then the bottom to the top is the rebirth.

  1. Hi Bri,
I saw your bird parts earlier today and I am very excited to see how it proceeds! I was wondering if you were going to include smell or how this work would be lit? With your concept of life, death, and rebirth I am brought back to the Vanitas and their use of dramatic lighting. I would look at some of those Dutch Still Life paintings and for this concept.
