Katie Hines - The History of Installation Art GPT

Date: 4/11/23

When I put in the prompt to ChatGPT, it only gave me one small paragraph to work with. It wasn't too far off on its definition of installation art, explaining that it "involves creating a three-dimensional space or environment that the viewer can interact with... and is often site-specific" I would argue that it does not always have to interact with the viewer, not every installation is immersive, but interaction is an important element to consider.

It then went through the history and stated that installation art did not emerge until the 1960s-70s as "a response to the limitations of traditional art forms," which we know is incorrect. The first installation work was Marcel Duchamp's Fountain, in 1917. ChatGPT did not mention any artists by name since it only generated a paragraph (every time I entered the prompt, or variations of it, the response was the same).

Much more information could have been provided, it was very frustrating that it would not give more, but the information it did provide wasn't terribly wrong. I was surprised to see this, I expected many more errors than just the timeline.
