Bryan-
Make sure you hit publish once you have added to a post, so since I am hitting publish, you will add and hit update.
Going forward- Artists to look at:
Annette Messager, Ernesto Neto, Katherine Spence
Once I see your materialistic idea I can offer more artists..
For
Mondays' class: Pick at least one of these installation artists ( can
be more than one if you desire) to share with the class. You should be
able to speak 5-10 minutes. Look in the Library (Coe library) to see
what books/articles are available on your chosen person so you are not only looking online. How can you take what they do and allow it to inspire your Materialistic installation?
- Where are they from
- What are the ideas they are pursuing?
- materials?
- intriguing aspects of their work that you can be inspired by?
Begin to blog about your ideas for Project #2.
Materialistic Installation Ideas
(sketches will come)
For this installation piece, I wanted to explore the materials and forms I was creating with the small worlds installation and create a similar environment within the
That gallery space.
I want to have fabric become the "walls and ceiling". I will drape fabric down the walls and have forms mounted to the wall so that the fabric doesn't become static, but rather bulging out in different places. I want to drape fabric across the ceiling so that I can "complete" this fabric room but also manipulate the lighting. I want a similar ambient lighting instead of six directional lights that can be seen. I want to create plaster forms that will act as seats or benches. I will have fabric cover any of the structure of the seats so that the space looks completely made of fabric. A way to create movement within the space is to use oscillating fans that will make the draped fabric billow.
With this installation, it will be more about the form and materials, as well as creating an environment. I want to create that sense of comfort and calmness that people felt from the small world. I want to continue to develop these forms so that i can in turn develop my other conceptual work. I am at a point where I need to continue researching and developing that work so that I create pieces that I feel present my intentions. That is why I want to continue working on these forms, as well as enjoying how the different forms and textures can be created using fabric and plaster.
The outcome of this piece for be was very successful. The original vision I had altered over the course of the construction process, but I feel it was for the better. I wanted to have more forms within the space because when I brought the seven I had completed into the space they felt dwarfed by this massive space. I hadnt added the fabric element so I wasnt sure how it was going to look when finalized so I started to carve more pieces. I started to get an allergic reaction to either the styrofoam or chemicals/ material on the surface of the styrofoam. I decided to stop working with the unfinished pieces and focus on altering the surface of the forms I had completed so that I didnt have to continue being around the material and re triggering the hives I was getting.
I painted the surface of the forms to match the wall paint. The whole space consisted of muted tones of white with softened light throughout the space. There is a fan above the draped fabric to create ripples so that the space didnt feel too stagnant. The fan also creates a soft white noise, sounding like wind which also creates a sort of nostalgic sense within the space. I wanted to continue manipulating the senses by having a subtle and soothing scent that is wafted throughout the air. There are some forms that people can sit on or a bean bad for them to lay on or rest their head and feel the wave of comfort wash over them.
The whole idea behind this piece, besides working with the hard and soft aspects of the materials was to create a sense of calmness and comfort, similar to the feelings i get when laying outside watching the clouds roll across the sky. This is where my intentions come through. The scent is subtle like that of fresh cut grass which could be smelled while gazing at the clouds. The movement of the fabric creates a motion that could resemble clouds moving. the sound could resemble wind or other distant noises. The forms are meant for people to interpret with their imagination, like finding creates within the clouds.
Site Specific Installation
Humans create a tremendous amount of trash and waste that ends up in landfills or even worse, get thrown out of car windows or dropped on the ground instead of in trash. This laziness and lack of compassion for the environment has created piles of trash that are scattered across the landscapes. When driving down the highways and interstates, there is always trash that is caught in fences and on plants as the wind tries to blow it way. Nature is a great collector of trash as it gets blown into the corner of fences areas and piles up or gradually builds up as it gets snagged on plants and fences.
The inspiration for this piece came when driving down the highway to Las Vegas, NM. As I was talking with my friends, I saw out of the corner of my eye, this huge black form that looked as if it was soaring low to the ground. I shifted my sight to try and spot this magnificent create, where I realized it was a black plastic bag that was caught on a fence and being whipped around by the wind.
This attention grabbing form really caught my attention but was nothing more than the evidence of the lack of concern and empathy for nature on humans part.
My idea for this piece is to create a flock of ambiguous bird forms that look as if they are flying away as if they were spooked, like birds do when you drive close to them. I have scouted out different areas that currently have a bunch of trash within the area. I will go and collect the trash to create the installation. In an ideal world, the wind will work with me so that the forms have movement and look as if they are flying. They are perpetually stuck in this space, never able to escape. I think this will have great impact when complete. The amount of trash used to create the forms will talk on the destruction of nature and carelessness of throwing things away, as well as how trash and garbage is harmful for the environment. Animals die from this waste and if we continue to not care about proper disposal, the only birds we will be able to see are the trash bags that appear to be birds.
As I continue to work and develop my idea for this site specific installation, I have altered the original idea. Where I live, there are always huge murders of crows that perch in trees, on power lines, and even in the streets. I feel this has a large part to do with being near a gas station and fast food restaurants where there is a lot of litter and goodies for these birds to scavenge from. I have altered the design to create a fake or imitation murder. With the trash that is collected, I will construct birds that will be placed on the ground, in the dirt and on the side walk, as well as create the forms that look as if they are trying to fly away. The forms on the ground will draw in peoples attentions and the motion hopefully created with the "flying"birds will add to this. The viewer will be displeased to find out that all they are gawking at is trash instead of the magnificent or ominous site that comes with an actual murder of crows.

The public expected more imposing, complex monument, with
marble, columns, and statues in the vein of other buildings on the mall
Veterans protested the design, claiming it was an ugly
insult the portrayed the war as shameful, dishonorable and worth hiding.
Campaign to change the wall to white and adding 8ft high
sculpture of soldiers to the site.
They used everything to change or abandon the project.
The committee compromised and added the 3rd place
