Idea 1:

This work is about finding peace in the radio static, the tranquility of quiet nothingness, and the soothing nature of watching repetitive but unpredictable motion, like watching a fish tank.

I want to create a room where people can go and sit for a while, just taking in the never-ending motion and hopefully find a bit of calm to help them get through their day.

This work was inspired by Ann Hamilton’s large installation work. Specifically The Event of a Thread, 2012-13 and Habitus, 2016-17.

Idea 2:
Firstly, the main inspiration for this work is the center piece. I wanted to create a comfortable space that you would be forced to share with an object that makes you uncomfortable. This center ovoid will have an object being spun around inside, causing it to smack into the ovoid walls. The walls being made of a harder substance, would make a ticking or dragging noise as the center piece continued to drum around the center of the ovoid. At the same time, light from below the ovoid would create shadows where the center piece touched.
The viewer would be asked to share an intimate, comfortable space with a ticking, "living" object.

This work was inspired by Ernest Neto, a contemporary visual artist with a focus on textiles. I find I am very attracted to the droopy nature of his pieces and the funny way it forces the viewer to interact.

Idea 3:

This work is about that one moment in our lives when the real world suddenly comes crashing in, and suddenly you understand what growing up is. For me, it was when my parents decided to get a divorce. Even though that moment came later in life for me, it was still the first time I felt the rough hand of the universe, that inevitable moment when you realize that we are all just freefalling through life, and if you think you know what the future will hold, you are wrong.

There are lots of moments when you grow up from being a kid, but this work is about the tension and violent emotions that we all feel the first time we are presented with the absolute truth of the world, with no one around to fall back on.

This work was inspired by Janie Antoni’s many works involving a tension created in the body when viewing her pieces. Her works revolve around the complex relationships between two objects or ideas, heightening the viewer's reactions as they move through the piece (visually or physically). One work and, 1996-99 involved grinding two stones together until they had formed their own relationship with each other.
#1 or #3
#2 is too derivative of Neto's work.  As an installation, I am most drawn to the first.

  1. Are you planning on keeping the fabric white on your first idea- I feel like with it pressed against the wall is doesn't change much but maybe playing with sheer fabric or colored fabric and lighting may change this.
