I have created a form to fit inside of the purse that keeps it open and gives me a work space within the purse but allows me to remove it so I am not trying to work directly in the purse itself. I have attached paper casts of stalagmites and stalactites to the inside of the workspace and then covered the interior with gesso. This gives the paper casts rigidity while also providing opacity as to not cause them to appear transparent when light is shining and on them. I used the gesso to push the rock texture further, allowing the rock formations to appear as accurate texture and not smooth forms as the paper provides.
date? Update:
After discussing my ideas with Ashley in class I have decided I am going to rework the concept I had for the spray can, concept 1, into a purse for my Small Worlds gallery. Below is my sketch with measurements and a rough concept. I am still continuing to push the concept of claustrophobia and this feeling of uncomfortableness while within the space. Even though the space has expanded I still want to keep the idea of one light source that allows these stalactites and stalagmites to cast shadows across the walls. The scale I have been working with is 1in:3ft making the confines of the would be gallery 40.5ft x 13.5ft x 29.25ft, this adds to the feeling of claustrophobia since as the gallery fills up people will be forced deeper and farther away from the door. I also want the “rock” structures to feel gigantic in comparison to theI will be using mostly cast paper for the forms in my installation, creating thick and opaque forms for the “rock” structures as well as a thin translucent form for the light source. I am currently experimenting with casting fabric to see if I get a better result for the opaque forms. Below are images of my forms and mold. Why are these blue?
Here are the ideas I have currently been working on:
Missing artist images/research.
1: The first concept2: My Second concept involves the space within a gift shop bag. The bag itself is of sturdy construction,
cardstock of some sort.
I want to explore the concept of how depression can take over your life, till you're trapped within yourself.
Conceptually creating a sea of clothing that has slowly started to creep up the walls, the clothing would be
deep enough that at the corners it is waist deep and towards the center it is ankle and knee deep.
There then would be a single chair in the center that invites the viewer to sit in the center of the pile.
There would be a single light hanging from a cord in the center that casts enough light for the room to
be visible but still dark.as the viewer wades through the clothing I want them to feel as if the room is
consuming them.
3: For my third concept, I want to replicate the feeling of being within a butcher's freezer.
I want the viewer to enter and be hit with the realization of where their meat actually comes from.
Entering a hallway created by hanging pig carcasses, with little to no light within the room.
Walking through the space, I want the viewer to exit the "museum" that this would be placed in and
enter a real butcher's freezer.
Hey Rees,
ReplyDeleteI think the idea with the piggy bank is a really interesting combination of humor and harsh reality. The conversation between something nostalgic and the brutal reality of how animals are treated is very interesting. With your first idea would the viewer enter in the space between the stalagmite and stalactite? I think that would push your concept of being between but color would also inform the viewer of the overall concept.
If you go the piggy bank route, I have a friend in Laramie who owns Taste of the Wind and they sell humanely raised pork and she might be able to share some of her knowledge, they have social media pages too fyi
